Artist Martin Brooks has been working with the patients of Saint-Vincent Hospital to create intricate digital collages through his computer graphics application ShapeVision.

Thanks to a New Horizons for Seniors Grant received in 2023, Radical Connections artists have been performing at the Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County’s Daisy Cafe.

Many artists within healthcare have demonstrated the accumulation of single-use plastics in hospitals through art pieces.

For the past year, Radical Connections has been working with Bruyère’s Palliative Care Unit (PCU) to find an innovative way to bring artists into palliative care.

Over the past spring and summer singer/songwriter and guitarist Chas Guay has been a vital part of Radical Connections programming. Whether it was performing in person in the Saint Vincent Hospital Atrium, facilitating music workshops for the residents of Elisabeth Bruyere with fellow artist Patricia Reynolds, or performing in the May HIP Live Stream, Chas has been right where we needed him.

Katie Kennedy, the museum curator at Northumberland County, reached out to Radical Connections as her newest project touches on the benefits of integrating cultural activities into long-term care homes.

Katherine is an amazing storyteller with an interesting life story of her own. She has been telling tales professionally since the early 1980s. She believes that one story sparks another and that stories let us connect, understand that we’re not alone, explore places that frighten or delight us, and see possibilities that might not have occurred to us otherwise. She tells real-life stories from her own and others’ lives as well as narratives passed down through her family. She also tells folktales from around the world that are as relevant now as they ever were.

With the granting of charitable status on February 3, 2023, we are very excited to invite our local community to assist with our fundraising efforts.

Storytelling exercises have often been used for patients in palliative care units to

reflect on and share lived experiences and explore difficult emotions. Storytelling validates feelings of suffering for family caregivers and promotes self-care for health care providers helping them to process challenging feelings.
